The Nigeria Union of Journalists, Lagos State Council has condemned in strong terms the attack by armed bandits on the Publisher of the Vanguard Newspapers, Sam Amuka-Pemu, at his residence in the early hours of Sunday.
According to the NUJ, it is matter for worry that publishers and journalists could become subject of attacks in the recent times by armed robbers and hoodlums.
In a statement signed by the Chairman, Comrade Deji Elumoye, and the Assistant Secretary, Comrade Alfred Odifa, the Union called on the Inspector General of Police, Solomon Arase, and the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State, Fatai Owoseni, to urgently investigate the incident, fish out the perpetrators and bring them to justice.
The statement further called on the Nigeria Police and other security agencies to wake up to their responsibilities in securing lives and properties with the sophisticated apparatus put in place by the Lagos State Government in combating crimes.
The NUJ reinstated that it would not watch members of the fourth estate of the realm being attacked by robbers and hoodlums without adequate and proper security networks.
