As players look forward to the commencement of the Nigeria Table Tennis Federation National Championships, the organisers have unveiled the mouthwatering prize money for the tournament holding at the Indoor Hall of the National Stadium Lagos..
The total prize money for the tournament is N2.8 million, with the cash reward for the singles event pegged at N1.12 million and the winners in the men and women singles events carting home N200,000 each.
There will also be cash reward for cadet and junior players in the doubles, singles and team events, while para athletes and veterans will also be part of the largesse.
According to the Secretary General of NTTF, Chinedu Ezeala-Ogundare, the prize money is aimed to make the tournament more competitive and reward the efforts of the players.
Ezeala-Ogundare said: “We have decided to make the prize money enticing for the players because this is another way to reward excellent performance from the players. We believe that this will make the championship competitive and encourage the players to give their best in all their matches. Apart from this, it will afford some players the opportunity to catch the attention of the national team handlers as this is a platform for the federation to unearth new players for the national teams at cadet, junior and senior levels.”
The scribe however said that the draws for the team event holds on November 14, while the championship serves off on Tuesday as teams are expected to be arriving from their various bases this weekend.
The Indoor Hall of the National Stadium and the National Training Centre will host the five-day championship, with the grand finale scheduled for November 19.
