The Research, Health, Safety and Environmental Services Department of the Nigerian Railway Corporation on Saturday said that dirty residents of its staff quarters would face sanction.
The Deputy Director of RHSES, James Zang, told the News Agency of Nigeria that anybody found in a dirty environment during inspection would henceforth face sanction.
Zang said it had been observed that many occupants of the staff quarters did not come out for the environmental sanitation or disposed their waste regularly.
Zang said: “My department in August Environmental Sanitation Day staged a road show in collaboration with the Lagos State Waste Management Authority and the Federal Medical Centre, Ebute Meta, Lagos.
“We moved round the whole streets in the staff quarters campaigning for the need to always keep their surroundings clean and dispose their wastes regularly with LAWMA.
“We have made arrangements with LAWMA to come to the staff quarters at least twice weekly.”
The Deputy Director said that as awards were given to three families that met the cleanliness requirements, so also will sanctions be given to families that defaulted.
He said that families that defaulted would be given two warning letters and “if they refuse to change, will face sanction”.
Zang said that the sanction might be to either pay fine or to relieve them of their residence.
Zang cautioned: “We are hereby urging them to abide by the environmental sanitation law to remain in their residence and to also be healthy always.
“We believe that when our staff and their families are healthy, the NRC will grow beyond limit because health is wealth.”
