Sharks of Port Harcourt’s title chase will be put to test on Sunday as the Blue Angel are guests to Warri Wolves in a Week 15 of the Nigeria Premier Football League fixture.
This is the big clash of this weekend as league leaders, Sharks, come up against tested opposition, Warri Wolves, in fifth position.
Sharks are definitely in for a game as they face a team yet to concede in six league matches at home.
Wolves could equally be without their captain and defender, Azubuike Egwuekwe, who is all set to be part of the Super Eagles camp ahead of the World Cup in Brazil.
Apart from this battle in Warri, it is a weekend of multi-centre attractions, with focus on the ties in the cities of Aba, Akure, Enugu, Port Harcourt and Kano hosting big matches and involving clubs in the top and bottom of the Glo Premier League table.
In Aba, bottom-placed Nembe City are up against Enyimba, now playing themselves back into reckoning.
Dolphins will on Saturday battle their old foes, Bayelsa United, at the Liberation Stadium, Port Harcourt
This is a clash of two former champions in the Garden City.
Bayelsa United struggled to get a result against Dolphins in their last four league meetings.
The last time Bayelsa won a league game against Dolphins was in March 2007.
Last season, Dolphins ran out 2-0 winners in this same clash and now face a Bayelsa United side, which boasts of one of the league’s leading scorers in Peter Ebimobowei.
It is going to be a contest of big stars in the Garden City.
Kano Pillars will square up with El-Kanemi Warriors at the Ahmadu Bello Stadium, Kaduna
Last season league champions, Kano Pillars, defeated El-Kanemi 2-0 through goals from Kabiru Umar and Mustapha Musa.
Warriors will be kicking themselves for failing to take the full points midweek before going into this northern derby.
But El-Kanemi are tenants to Kano fans and must be counting their luck in Pillars’ banishment to Kaduna.
Yet a negative result for Pillars may turn Kano fans against their guests.
Pillars have gone on a run of five matches without losing and they are showing the old form that won them their last two league titles.
El-Kanemi’s coach, Salisu Yusuf, will come up against his former team and it will be interesting to see how he sets up his boys against the champions.
At other centres, Sunshine Stars will entertain Nasarawa United, Akwa United will engage Lobi Stars, FC Taraba welcomes struggling Heartland to Jolly Nyame Stadium in Jalingo.
Heartland will face FC Taraba for the first time in the Glo Premier League.
The coach of the Jalingo-based club, Ndubuisi Nduka, is interestingly a former coach of Heartland and will want to prove how well he knows their opponents.
Meanwhile, FC Taraba have beaten stellar sides like Bayelsa United, Enyimba and Rangers and will want to add Heartland to that list.
