Gombe United have began the season struggling to find their footing and their situation was not helped by the ill health of their Belgian Manager Maurice who is still not sufficiently strong to rejoin the team.
For the Savannah Scorpions as they are fondly called by their vociferous followers, the coming 11 matches to the end of the Glo Premier League 2013/14 season will be key in determining their stay or otherwise in the elite cadre.
Coming back from an awkward double road trip to Port Harcourt where they lost to Sharks and Dolphins in Match Days 26 and 27 respectively, Gombe United have three regional derbies to contend with in the coming Match Days.
First, they play home against high riding Nasarawa United and then travel to Kaduna to challenge the Crocodiles and returning home to face North East neighbours, El-Kanemi Warriors.
Former Super Eagles Coach, Austin Eguavoen’s arrival midseason as Technical Adviser had looked like it changed the Club’s fortune for good with a string of good results including a win away to Bayelsa United and a 3-3 draw with Rangers International seemed to have eased their relegation worries.
But with the string of losses in Port Harcourt, Eguavoen stated that his team will have to put the back-to-back defeats behind them and focus on the task ahead.
“It was disappointing because we felt we could gain some points from the trip. I think we dominated against Dolphins but couldn’t make it count. Those have gone behind now and we look (ahead) to upcoming games” began Eguavoen.
Gombe United are placed 18th on the 20-team log of the Glo Premier League but just one point adrift of 15th placed Kaduna United who they will face after they might have hosted Nasarawa United this midweek and Eguavoen believes the swinging nature of the log means his side still have a realistic chance of swimming out of the drop zone.
“We’ll keep fighting, no doubt. It’s up today, down tomorrow but I can guarantee you, we will come out of it” was the calm assurance from the
Coach whose mates loved to call Cerezo in his playing days.
Ahead of the clash with Nasarawa United on Wednesday, Eguavoen also hopes to have his first choice goalkeeper Chigozie Agbim back in the squad.
“Agbim was injured against Sharks and although I have to appreciate the performance of Ahmed (Yusuff) against Dolphins, I will still hope that Agbim comes back for our next games,” he concluded.
