The police in Ogun State has said contrary to reports on the social media networks, no female student was beheaded in the state.
A statement by the Ogun State Police Command on Monday said the report remains a rumor.
It said there were no corpses on the Ibadan-Ijebu-Ode Road as alleged.
There had been reports that three female students were dumped by persons riding in a Jeep on the Ibadan-Ijebu-Ode Road.
The names of the ladies were given as Yetunde Ajao of the University of Lagos, Oyindamola Esan of the Olabisi Onabanjo University,, with the other of unknown identity.
In fact, photographs were provided to support the claim, a development that made it even more difficult for the report to be believed.
The spokesperson of the Ogun State Police Command, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, however, contradicted this claim.
Adejobi said in a statement on Monday: “The attention of the Ogun State Police Command has been drawn to a rumour of three (3) beheaded female corpses allegedly dumped along Ijebu-Ode/Ibadan road on Sunday 24/03/2013 being widely circulated on a social network.
“This message being circulated is a mere rumour, calculated to create fears in the minds of Nigerians and unnecessary civil disturbance.
“The Command wishes to state categorically that the rumour is the handiwork of mischief makers and should be disregarded by the general public.
“On this note, the Commissioner of Police Ogun State, CP Ikemefuna Okoye, fdc, assures the general public of the Command’s commitment in providing adequate security for all and sundry in Ogun State.”
