The Chairman, Mighty Jets FC of Jos, Chief Godfrey Hamza, on Sunday expressed delight over his side’s victory in its first outing in the 2013/2014 Nigeria National League.
The Jos side spanked Spotlight FC of Katsina 3-0 at the Rwang Pam Township Stadium on Saturday as the competition kicked off.
Hamza told the News Agency of Nigeria in Jos that winning the first match of the season was “a big morale booster for the team”.
The chairman, who said that Mighty Jets’ sights were already on the Globacom Premier League, described the win as the first step toward achieving that dream.
He, however, said that some “nuts need to be tightened” to correct the lapses noticed during the match.
Hamza said: “We would have scored more goals but for poor finishing.
“Certainly, we shall do better as the league continues.”
Hamza said the team had a good technical crew and good players and promised to keep encouraging them to put in their best.
“With the support the club enjoys from the Plateau Government, we expect a strong showing throughout the season,” he said.
Bernard Ogbe, the team’s Chief Coach, told NAN that they would not be overwhelmed by the victory.
Ogbe said: “We shall go back and work on our lapses.
“We need to keep making efforts toward an even much better showing.”
Ogbe said he expected steady progress because the team recruited many good players during the transfer window.
Elijah Samuel put the home side on the lead in the 36th minute of the encounter, while William Abba doubled it in the 64th minute.
Cletus Nkenji wrapped up the game in the 74th minute with a powerful grounder.
From Minna comes the report that Niger Tornadoes Football Club on Saturday defeated visiting Supreme Court FC of Abuja 3-0 in the Nigeria National League at the Bako Kontagora Memorial Stadium in Minna.
Agboola Kayode scored the first goal for Tornadoes through a penalty kick barely five minutes into the game.
Bolaji Adeyemo extended the lead for the home side in the game’s 25th minute after he dribbled past two defenders and shot past goalkeeper Jato Joseph.
Niger Tornadoes got their third goal of the match in the 40th minute after Lukman Mohammed scored during a goalmouth scramble.
All efforts by the visiting team to reduce the tally did not yield any result until the end of the first half.
The second half of the game ended without either side scoring any goal, even as Supreme Court FC outplayed the home team.
The match was a week one match in the Group A of the NNL which kicked off at the weekend.
