The Nigeria Medical Association, Dr Francis Faduliye, says prioritising healthcare by all tiers of government in the country will reduce brain drain in the health sector.
Faduyile said this in an interview with the News agency of Nigeria on Friday in Abuja.
He said that government at all levels should, as a matter of urgency, prioritise healthcare by showing more political commitment to the sector and paying better and competitive wages to health workers.
He said that to retain the best brains in the sector, government should provide better working conditions and enabling environment for practice.
The NMA president said government should properly secure doctors and other health professional as well as ensure they had access to social amenities and better opportunities.
According to him, the country will be heading to a catastrophic human resource crisis in the sector if the current rate of migration of medical and dental practitioners overseas was not reversed.
Faduliye commended the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress for their struggle for better wage for workers over the years.
He also commended President Muhammadu Buhari for signing the new minimum wage into law, adding that its quick implementation would assuage the feelings of Nigeria workers.
