The Nigerian Medical Association has pledged to promote patient-centred approach healthcare delivery to boost healthcare services in the country.
Dr Ekpe Philips, the newly elected Chairman of the association in FCT, made the pledge at the swearing in of eight new executive members on Saturday in Abuja.
Philips said that one of the main focuses of the new executive would be to enhance healthcare service delivery to the residents.
He said: “We are going to take the NMA to another level; it is going to be patients-centred approach.
“We are going to look at how the patients in FCT are going to receive the best practice ever.
“By the time we treat them well they will be the ones to fight for us. We will also focus on the welfare of the members of NMA.”
Dr Ofen Enang, the out-going Chairman, Caretaker Committee of the branch, called on government to be co-active and attend to legitimate complains of NMA members in good time.
Enang said: “We regret the instances that we have to go on strike. It is an unfortunate path we have found ourselves in.
“I will never agree that strike is the only way out especially what we do as healthcare professionals.
“It is our duty to save lives but it is very painful that it happens. These strikes happened because of the failure of the system to respond to legitimate demands.”
Also sworn in as the new officials were: Dr Eziechila Joseph as Vice Chairman; Dr Akor Godday, Secretary; and Dr Agba Akomaye, Assistant Secretary.
Others were Dr Atinko Sunday, Treasurer; Dr Ohaeri Kennedy, Financial Secretary; Dr Nassamu Yakub, PRO; and Dr Obayi Emmanuel, Social Secretary.
