Presidential spokesman, Femi Adesina, appears to have pulled the rug from under the feet of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party with his latest revelation that the controversial fund from the Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas Company came into the coffers of the government at the end of June.
This was after the exit from office of the PDP-led government of Dr. Goodluck Jonathan.
The former president left office on May 29.
Adesina’s revelation meant the funds came in one month after Jonathan left office.
Adesina said this on his Twitter handle on July 8.
He wrote: “NLNG receipts came into FG’s coffers June ending.
“How then could it have been part of money left behind, as claimed by PDP?”
The fund became controversial when the PDP, through its National Publicity Secretary, Olisa Metuh, said it was part of the money left behind by the Jonathan administration.
Metuh said the $2.1 billion, which was released for the payment of government workers at the federal and state levels, was part of the $5.5 billion left behind by Jonathan from payments by the NLNG.
President Muhammadu Buhari had on assumption of office said he met an empty treasury, a claim that was disputed by the PDP.
This was more so after the release of the $2.1 billion for the payment of workers’ salaries.
