The Nigeria Labour Congress has urged Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan of Delta State to fulfil his promises to retirees in the state.
The congress said Uduaghan did not fulfil his promise of releasing N1.5 billion monthly from the Internally Generated Revenue of the state to offset the backlog of the dues of the retirees, which his government inherited largely.
The state chapter of the congress said the huge accumulated unpaid benefits have now become worrisome, hence something must be done before the tenure of the governor expires.
The congress therefore urged the government of the state to continue to pay their monthly salaries until their gratuities were paid.
The Delta State chairman of the NLC, Comrade Williams Akporeha, in a singed protest statement wondered why the governor of the reneged after keeping to his promise once.
Akporeha said the N500 million Uduaghan was releasing to the retirees monthly was inadequate.
He said the State Executive Council of the congress has just lamented how the state was paying lip service to retirees’ plight.
While calling on state government to consider “without further delay” the timely payment of monthly salaries to primary school teachers and council workers across the state as done in other sectors, Akporeha lauded the continuous and pragmatic efforts by the governor to enhance workers’ welfare, especially the prompt payment of salaries and the approval 13th month bonus.
