The Nigeria Labour Congress on Tuesday said it had suspended the proposed protest in Lafia, Nasarawa State over the killing of two of its members by policemen in the state.
Ayuba Wabba, the National President of the congress, said this while addressing workers at the Labour House, Lafia.
Wabba said the decision of the congress would stand pending the outcome of investigation by the National Human Right Commission.
He said the suspension of the rally followed two letters the union received on Monday from the NHRC and the Nasarawa State Government.
“The NHRC communicated us through a letter advising us to suspend the planned rally,” he said.
Wabba said the commission had in the letter advised the state government to stop the illegal deductions from workers’ salary, pending the outcome of the investigation.
He said: “We are also aware that the government has made pronouncement and issued a letter officially stopping all deductions until the investigation is concluded.
“Although we received the letter from NHRC very late, as law abiding citizens, we would not go ahead with the procession as advised by the commission.”
Wabba said the Central Working Committee of the congress had initially scheduled the mass rally in Lafia on August 23 to mourn the slain colleagues and to show its rejection of the illegal pay cut by the state government.
Meanwhile, members of the congress in Anambra State on Tuesday held solidarity rally over the killing two of their colleagues in Nasarawa State on July 29.
Jerry Nnubia, the Chairman of the congress, said it was sad that the harmless union members protesting pay cut by the Nasarawa State Government died from the bullets allegedly used by security agents.
Nnubia called on the government to bring the culprits to book, adding, “We are protesting against the brutality of the Police who are paid with workers’ tax, they are paid to protect Nigerians and their property not to kill or maim them.
“The Nigerian workers have right to peacefully protest the policies of government, that is why our colleagues in Nasarawa protested only to be gunned down.”
