The Nigeria Labour Congress on Wednesday appealed to the Federal Government to resolve the ongoing crisis between it and the Academic Staff Union of Universities.
Abdulwaheed Omar, the NLC President, made the appeal at the end of the National Executive Council meeting of the congress in Kaduna.
Omar said that the council had resolved to step up its intervention initiative by reaching out to the government at the highest level.
He stressed that part of the decision was also to dialogue with ASUU to achieve the needed breakthrough and save the students from further trauma.
He said: “Congress wants a comprehensive approach to the crises in the education sector as a strategy for conflict resolution.
“This response-strategy has become necessary in the light of the fact that virtually all the unions in the sector are on the verge of an industrial action.
“Most, if not all, are induced by government’s breach of agreements.”
The labour leader said the Council-in-Session expressed its deep concern for the near total collapse of the education sector.
He expressed concern that government had allowed the strike by ASUU to drag on for so long with incalculable consequences.
ASUU had been on strike for four months due to the non-implementation of some aspects of its agreement with the Federal Government.
