The Cross River State Police Command on Monday in Calabar confirmed the death of nine persons in a fatal accident along the Calabar-Ikom highway.
The Police Public Relations Officer in Cross River State, Hogan Bassey, told newsmen the accident occurred in Adim Community of Biase Local Government Area of the state.
“Nine persons died in the accident,” Bassey said without giving more details.
Festus Ndimele, the Public Relations Officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps in the state, however, could not immediately confirm the accident.
The FRSC official said he was not in the office and did not have information on the incident.
Eyewitness accounts had it that the accident was caused by a head-on collision between a truck and a blue taxi cab.
According to the accounts, the two vehicles were travelling in opposite directions, with the truck coming from Calabar.
They said the taxi cab, which had 11 passengers on board, was coming from the Ogoja-Ikom axis.
Three of the passengers had survived on the spot of the accident, only to later die while being conveyed to the general hospital at Ugep.
Eyewitnesses told newsmen that the truck driver had attempted to avoid some potholes when his vehicle veered off its lane and collided with the taxi cab which was on the other lane.
