The Vice Chancellor of Nigeria’s premier university, the University of Ibadan, Prof. Isaac Adewole, has said that Nigerians have no business being hungry.
Prof. Adewole stated this when senior management staff of Flour Mills of Nigeria Plc paid him a courtesy visit in his office on Wednesday.
The Flour Mills of Nigeria Plc is partnering with the Department of Food Technology of the university to establish a Cereal Research Centre, where high quality grains will be produced for consumption and possible export.
Adewoye, while commending the efforts of the Flour Mills of Nigeria Plc in the quest for sustainable food production in Nigeria, said committed efforts to eradicate hunger is the responsibility of all Nigerians.
He said: “Food is among our strategic plan for the university, with the others been an improved energy and health services.
“Nigeria has all it takes to be one of the world’s producer of quality food because we have the land and fertile vegetation.
Nigerians have no business being hungry and as a responsible university, we are not looking for donation but partnership.
“The university of Ibadan is a pace setter and as such we have began a total overhaul of our Faculty of Agriculture.
“We have reconstructed our fish farm and established an aquaculture unit, which will produce massive fingerlings.”
Adewole also stated that the UI abattoir will soon become foremost for quality meat, while the diary unit will be repositioned too.
He added: “The world has moved beyond the university dependence on the community and the government.
“Rather, it is the community that should be impacted by the university and the university of Ibadan is looking for partnership that will help us impact our society positively.
“We are looking at a sustained partnership and our ultimate goal is to eradicate hunger in our society.”
In the same vein, officers from Promasidor Limited, makers of Cowbell milk, also paid a courtesy visit to the vice chancellor.
