Nigeria, as the current chairman of the conference of Ministers of Education of African countries, will henceforth provide leadership in the availability of education data.
The Minister of Education, Prof. Ruquattu Ahmed Rufai’i, stated this at the Nigerian Education Data survey 2010 plus project launched in her office in Abuja.
According to Rufai’i, efforts are on to ensure that the ministry will always have access to information to aid the quest to meet the National Education Strategic goal of access to quality education as contained in the Transformation Agenda and the Four-Year Strategic Plan for the Development of the Education sector.
She expressed appreciation for the consistent support of USAID in not only helping in the issues of collecting and analyzing data, but also in the provision of software to assist the government in data collection and management
Rufai’i said with confidence, that the EMIS Tool Box will turn out to be the answer to the long search for a simple approach to collecting and management information of the sector.
The minister stated that the ministry will do everything possible to ensure that full advantage is taken of this support, adding that officers of the ministry must work towards providing a conducive environment for the USAID officials that are to work with the ministry for the next few months.
In his introductory address, the leader of the team, Alhaji Mohammed Haladu, stated that the data launch will create an enabling status to get more information, adding that Nigerians will witness new developments and its application.
Haladu promised to assist the ministry in such a manner that at the end of the exercise, Nigeria will bounce back to lead other countries in West Africa that are looking forward for Nigeria to lead.
In his own remarks, the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Education, Dr. MacJohn Nwaobiala, said over the years, the Federal Ministry of Education has received support from the United States of America through USAID, adding that it is not necessary to over emphasize the need for data.
Nwaobiala said data is very critical at this time in the Ministry, adding that people come from the states to demand for data.
He then pledged to support the group to work effectively during their stay, adding that wide publicity will be given to the data to move Nigeria forward.
