The President of Nigeria Weightlifting Federation, Yahaya Mohammed, on Friday in Abuja said the federation’s athletes would participate in the Youth Weightlifting Championship/2020 Olympics qualifiers in December.
Mohammed told the News Agency of Nigeria that the qualifiers would hold at Doha in Qatar from December 19 to December 23.
He said: “Five male and female athletes will present the federation at the event which will determine the federation’s participation in the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, Japan.
“We pray that they will have a good performance so that we can represent the country at the Olympics.’’
The NWF president said there would be an open trial for the athletes in the second week of November in Abuja, ahead of the competition in Qatar.
He added: “I know we have many qualified athletes, but we want to select the best who will represent us and make us proud.’’
Mohammed assured that the federation would provide all the necessary material and financial requirements to encourage the athletes to perform well in the competition and book tickets for the Olympics.
NAN reports that the 2020 Summer Olympics, known as Tokyo 2020, is an international multi-sports event and scheduled to take place from July 24 to August 9 of 2020.
