An entrepreneur, Muhammad Mustafa, on Friday in Lagos said that several bye-products like brake pads, paving bricks and clutch discs could be got from the pulverised coconut shell.
Mustafa, who is the Executive Director, Doublem Enterprises Development Centre, told the News Agency of Nigeria that automotive fuel could be extracted from refined coconut oil.
He said that these were just some of the benefits of coconut palms value chain addition if proper attention was given to the development of coconut section of the agriculture industry.
Mustafa said: “We have been doing some researches to refine coconut oil to produce automotive fuel and the outcome is very impressive because we have samples already from the research we have conducted.
“Also, the shell if pulverised, can be molded as brake pads, clutch discs and paving bricks which are already in use in some parts of the world.
“Coconut is a commercial tree and we have seen that there is need to preserve and develop this section of the economy.”
Mustafa said that people only recognised coconut oil extracted for cooking, beauty products, hair products and industry but failed to look beyond the oil and milk.
According to him, the shell of the coconut that was hitherto thrown away was also economical and could earn foreign exchange.
