The Niger State Police Command on Thursday said as a way to reduce crime to the barest minimum in the state, it convicted 1,878 suspects in 2013.
The state Commissioner of Police, Diseye Desire Nsirim, disclosed this at a press conference in Minna, saying that the Command did not relent in enhancing operational readiness of its personnel in discharging their duties compared to 2012.
According to Nsirim: “Crime wave in Niger State from March 2012 to date was drastically reduced to the barest minimum as a result of strategies put in place by the Command to curb the menace of the miscreants.
“We convicted 1,878 suspects in 2013 against 742 in 2012.
“Some of the strategies bother on constant raids of criminal hideouts and black spots; training and re-training of officers; Police Community partnership via community policing; zero tolerance to corruption amongst the members of the force; and intelligence gathering.
“For the purpose of visibility and accountability by members of the public, patrol vehicles and armed policemen are deployed and positioned at strategic locations.
“Motor cycle patrol was introduced, thereby sectorising Minna metropolis to six zones.
“We also introduced and operated a two by two foot patrol within Minna.”
The police boss also said within the period under review, the Command carried out several programmes aimed at boosting the image of the force and creating a more people friendly Nigeria Police.
