The Niger State Government has on Saturday released 13 suspected bandits unlawfully detained as part of a peace deal with armed bandits terrorising parts of the State.
The State Governor, Alhaji Abubakar Sani Bello, disclosed this while releasing the suspected bandits in a ceremony held at Justice Idris Legbo Kutigi International Conference Hall, Minna.
The Governor further explained that government is worried with activities of armed bandits, kidnappers and cattle rustlers across the State, a development that prompted government to initiate dialogue with the bandits some weeks ago in Kotonkoro, Mariga Local Government Area, during which agreement were reached, including the release of some suspected bandits held by the security agencies in the State.
Bello divulged that a spate of successes has been recorded so far through the dialogue initiative government adopted, expressing confidence in the adopted measure as the best way around the situation.
Bello called on security agencies to intensify surveillance effort in the collective bid to bring an end to the activities of armed bandits in Niger State and other parts of the country.
The Secretary to the State Government, Ahmed Ibrahim Matane, while fielding questions from newsmen hinted that the State Government has put in place potent measures aimed at rehabilitating the repentant bandits.
The SSG appealed to the security agencies and other stakeholders in the state to compliment the effort of the present administration in the same direction.
