The Niger State Government on Thursday advocated early detection of cancer as panacea for curtailing the massive death recorded by the scourge among the people.
The Commissioner for Health and Hospital Services, Dr. Ibrahim Babamini Sule, said this in his welcome address at the occasion of the flag-off ceremony of national breast cancer awareness campaign and distribution of breast self-examination kits at the Maternal and Child Health Clinic, Minna.
According to Sule: “Cancer scares people because it is always associated with its terminal outcome.
“Breast cancer and cancer of the uterine cervix are the main cancers in women all over the world.
“Early detection of breast cancer saves life.
“The size of the breast mass is not an indication of whether or not it is cancerous.
“Hence, the importance of early detection and relevant appropriate medical attention.”
Sule disclosed that the state got 55,000 breast cancer testing kits, which were donated by the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria, and will be distributed to the 25 Local Government Councils in the state and other stakeholders in a bid to check the spread of breast cancer.
He added: “We are distributing a total of 55,000 breast cancer test kits to our 25 local government councils and other stakeholders.
“Each of the local government councils would get 2,000 kits while 5,000 would be distributed to other stakeholders by the wife of the state Governor, Hajiya Jumai Aliyu.”
Sule said the state has established a cancer control programme with a desk officer and registry at the Pathology Unit, General Hospital, Minna, for compilation of all cancer cases at the hospital.
Declaring the event open, Hajia Jumai Aliyu thanked the organizers for being pro-active on issues bordering on women matters.
She specifically commended the state ALGON on the initiative of tackling the scourge of cancer headlong.
He assured ALGON that women in the state would make judicious use of the kits provided in order to live free of the cancer endemic ravaging the people.
