The Chief Judge of Niger State, Justice Fati Abubakar, has released 20 inmates at the old Minna Prison.
Abubakar released the inmates on Wednesday during her visit to the detention facility in Minna.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the freed inmates were those awaiting trial with offence ranging from armed robbery to criminal conspiracy among others.
Abubakar cautioned all security stakeholders against unnecessary detention of prison inmates without trial for a long period of time.
She enjoined those released from prison to be of good conduct and shun criminal acts, adding that a lot of good things awaited them outside the prison.
NAN reports that the prison tour is an annual exercise aimed at decongesting prisons in the state.
