The Niger State Government on Saturday said it has approved N47 million for the 120-man state’s contingent to the National Youth Games.
The games have been scheduled for September 7 to 17, 2017 in Ilorin, Kwara State.
Malam Mamman Musa, the state’s Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, made this known in Minna in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria.
Musa said: “The Niger State Government has approved the released N47 million to participate in the NYG in Ilorin.”
He assured the athletes and officials that the money would be disbursed to them before their departure.
He urged the athletes and officials to work hard toward winning laurels for the state.
The Commissioner enjoined the team Niger to be good ambassadors of the state during the game by obeying the rules of the game and not engaging in any unlawful act.
Similarly, Alhaji Baba Sheshi, the Director of Sports at the ministry, said the 120-man contingent include 88 athletes and 32 officials.
Sheshi said the state contingent for the games was ready because they have been training even before the zonal elimination series from August 17 to 19.
He said: “Our coaches and athletes have been training and they are doing well.”
He said the athletes would compete in handball, athletics, judo, badminton, table tennis, taekwondo, karate, kunfu, weightlifting, swimming, para-athletics, chess, scrabble, squash, tennis and wrestling.
NAN reports that the state contingent finished 11th position out of the 36 states and Abuja in the 2016 edition of the game.
