The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission said it has begun moves to facilitate the release of a Nigerian Doctor, Dr. Omafuvwe Jerome Ighowho, who cried for help over his detention in Saudi Arabia.
However, the Commission, in a statement it issued on Sunday, said it was yet to receive the latter the Doctor wrote.
Recall that The Eagle Online had on Sunday reported that Ighowho claimed that he sent a letter to the NiDCOM on his detention by the Saudi Arabia Police.
Reacting in a statement by its Head of Media, Public Relations and Protocols, Abdur-Rahman Balogun, NiDCOM said: “The attention of the Management of Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) has been drawn to the news item making rounds in some sections of the media about a Nigerian Medical Doctor based in Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Dr Omafuvwe Jerome Ighowho, who allegedly appealed to the Chairman/CEO of NIDCOM, Dr. Abike Dabiri-Erewa to come to his aid in the custody of the law enforcement agents in the Kingdom.
“Though the Commission received no such communication and only read it on some Newspapers like others, in line with the Federal Government’s citizen diplomacy policy, the Commission will reach out to the Nigerian Mission in Saudi Arabia to get more details on the matter , which is already a court case in a Saudi court ,and proffer likely next steps that can be taken.
“Ighowho allegedly assaulted his Sudanese colleague identified as Dr Adel Idris, over which he had been detained by the Saudi police, after a complaint by the Sudanese.”
