The National Human Rights Commission has called for the cooperation of the Benue State Judiciary in efforts to bring the killers of the 17 unidentified persons in Gboko area of the state to justice.
The Executive Secretary of the Commission, Prof. Bem Angwe, made the call when he paid a courtesy visit to the Benue State Chief Judge, Justice Iorhemen Hwande, on Friday in Makurdi.
Angwe said unknown assailants killed the 17 unidentified persons recently in Gboko Local Government Area and the police in the area reportedly took the corpses to the General Hospital.
He, however, said some irate youths allegedly went to the hospital and tampered with the corpses in front of the hospital morgue, where they were deposited.
The NHRC scribe said the non-documentation of such cases by the police had breached the fundamental human rights of the deceased persons.
He, therefore, called for the cooperation of the chief judge to unravel the mystery behind the killings and subsequent dumping of the corpses in front of the mortuary.
“I sincerely call on the chief judge to assist the Commission to unravel the mystery surrounding the killings and bring the perpetrators to justice,” Angwe said.
Responding, Hwande condemned the barbaric act and promised that inquiries would be made into the matter to ascertain the cause of their death and why they were dumped in that manner.
The chief judge said those found to be involved in the dastardly act would face the wrath of the law.
He lauded Angwe for the good job he was doing in the Commission and encouraged him to continue in the service to his fatherland.
