An NGO, Equity Alliance, has urged the Federal Government to revoke the contracts for the reconstruction of Zaria-Pambeguwa and Birnin Gwari-Dan Gulbi roads.
This was contained in a letter to the Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, signed by its Chairman, Alhaji Magaji Baba, and made available to the News Agency of Nigeria in Zaria, Kaduna State on Tuesday.
The NGO accused the construction companies of poor performance and negligence.
The letter reads in part: “With due respect, we wish to draw the attention of the Honourable Minister about the negligence and poor performance of the companies executing the two contracts.
“The above named group has gone round the roads to ascertain the level of progress, however, on reaching the sites, we were disappointed by the situation of the roads in question.
“The poor performance of the companies undertaking the projects is actually causing a lot of accidents, many motorists lost and are still loosing their lives apart from loss of huge amount of money.”
According to the NGO, none of the contractors exceeded 10 per cent of the work, while the standard of work being done in both places was very poor.
It said: “During our visit to the sites, none of the contractors exceeded 10 per cent so far and the work done is substandard and there was poor mix ratio on the drainage work.
“It is saddening to note that many potholes were sighted on the newly constructed parts especially on Zaria-Pambeguwa road, an 88 kilometer project, indicating lack of experience from the contractors.
“Therefore, we are appealing to the Minister of Works and Housing to revoke these contracts and re-award same to highly competent companies that will execute the projects within the stipulated period.”
The NGO advised communities along the roads to monitor the projects with a view to ensuring quality job and speedy completion.
It appreciated the member representing Soba Federal Constituency, Alhaji Ibrahim Hamza, for his concern and continuously monitoring the projects.
