The Lift Above Poverty Organisation an NGO, says two million Nigerians will benefit from its Community Campaign for Cancer Control programme.
The Coordinator of the LAPO C4 project, Tessa Aizebokhai, made this known to the News Agency of Nigeria shortly after its Cancer Road Walk programme in Benin on Wednesday.
Aizebokhai explained that the LAPO C4 programme was initiated to create more awareness on the different types of cancer and expose people to screening opportunities.
She said that the programme would run concurrently in the FCT, Imo, Rivers, Lagos and Edo states.
Aizebokhai said that LAPO had given grants to 13 Community Based Organisations which were currently working with the NGO to implement the project.
Besides, the programme coordinator said that the NGO was willing to collaborate with government on policies geared towards cancer reduction in the country.
Aizebokhai said: “Most hospitals across the country do not have cancer screening machines and the fees are high in centres where these screening machines are functional.
“We want to partner the Nigerian government on how Nigerians, especially those at the community level can access cancer screening facilities at subsidised rate.
“The C4 programme will bring cancer services nearer to the people and make referrals to hospitals when need arises.”
