The leadership of the Nigeria Football Federation has allayed fears that the Super Eagles will not surpass Africa’s record of quarter final at the 2014 World Cup, given the current dispensation of the national team.
Speaking to newsmen at the Glasshouse in Abuja on Monday, the President of the NFF, Alhaji Aminu Maigari, said: “We are all aware of the sentiment of the CAF President, Issa Hayatou, for African teams going to the World Cup to go beyond the quarter-final.
“Super Eagles can go beyond the quarter-finals.
“In fact, our target is the semi-finals.”
On the quality of opposition the Super Eagles will meet at the mundial, the NFF chieftain said: “We are African champions and this fact we are not losing sight of and we want to go to Brazil to surpass previous Africa’s record.
“This is based on the quality of preparation we are rolling out for the team, which, for now, is under wrap.”
Maigari reasoned that one of the areas the NFF is drawing confidence from is the backing of the nation leadership from the executive and the legislature.
He said: “Don’t forget that we have our number one supporter, President Goodluck Jonathan, who has assured us of his backing.
“If for anything, we must go to Brazil and post a much better result to justify all the support we are enjoying from him.”
