The Nigeria Football Federation has heaped plaudits on President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan for Wednesday’s appointment of Hon. Gbenga Elegbeleye as the new Director-General of the National Sports Commission.
Speaking in Germany, where he is having a series of meetings with Nigeria’s kit sponsors, Adidas, and also appraising arrangements for camping programmes of the Super Eagles and Flying Eagles ahead of major competitions in the summer, the President of the NFF, Alhaji Aminu Maigari, was ecstatic as he spoke about the noble contributions and uncommon commitment of Elegbeleye to the development of Nigeria football, nay sports over the years.
Maigari said: “Hon. Elegbeleye has been at the forefront of the development of sports in our dear country for several years now. He had been very active in sponsorship and promotion of sports in the grassroots long before he came into the House of Representatives and became deputy Chairman of the House Committee on Sports.
“We have worked very closely over the years, when he was in the National Assembly and even after he had left, and one thing you can never dispute is his passion for the genuine development of our sports.”
Elegbeleye, a former council chairman in Ondo State, was named Director-General of the National Sports Commission on Wednesday by President Goodluck Jonathan.
He replaces the retired Dr. Patrick Ekeji.
Maigari added: “The rank and file of the NFF is excited about the coming of Hon. Elegbeleye because we are convinced, by his antecedents, that he will pursue real growth of the sports sector, in an atmosphere of peace and tranquillity. He is a man of honour and integrity and fully deserves the appointment.”
