Newcastle and Sunderland are interested in a short-term deal for Seattle Sounders striker, Obafemi Martins.
With both Newcastle and Sunderland desperate for points and goals to pull away from relegation trouble, there are reports that both clubs are interested in a move for the striker.
Martins was obviously at Newcastle United and one of the players who left at the end of the relegation season, whilst Sunderland boss, Sam Allardyce, managed him during his short disastrous spell at St James Park.
The media reports have it that any deal would only be a brief one during the MLS close season, as Seattle Sounders wouldn’t let him go permanently.
After a nomadic lifestyle after leaving Tyneside, the 31-year-old seems to have found a lifestyle and league that suits him.
In three seasons, Martins has started 73 MLS games, scoring 40 goals and registering 23 assists as well.
His form has led to a call back into the Nigeria squad and earlier this month he was used in both games against Swaziland as a sub in a double-header World Cup qualifier, Nigeria winning 2-0 on aggregate.
Sunderland already have former Seattle Sounder player, DeAndre Yedlin, on their books on loan from Tottenham.
Newcastle United are definitely in need of extra goals and inspiration up front, but it is doubtful whether Martins would be seen as a viable option on a short-term deal and the hope for most Newcastle fans is that surely another credible striker will arrive in January on a permanent deal.
