The 27-year-old suspect in the Monday terrorist attack in the New York City subway system now faces multiple charges, including supporting an act of terrorism and making a terrorist threat.
The New York City Police Department in a statement said: “Akayed Ullah, the suspect arrested in Monday’s terror attack in NYC, has been charged with the following: Criminal Possession of a Weapon, Support Act of Terrorism, Making Terroristic Threat.”
Ullah allegedly attacked a New York City subway passage shortly at 7.20am [12:20pm GMT] on Monday morning.
Deputy Police Commissioner for Counter-terrorism and Intelligence, John Miller, told reporters that Ullah was wearing a self-made explosive device that resembled a pipe bomb, attached to his body with velcro and zip ties.
The device malfunctioned and went off prematurely, leaving the suspect with serious injuries.
Three other people sustained minor injuries in the attack.
New York Mayor Bill de-Blasio said there were no other credible threats to New York City, but said police would enhance their presence in key public places around the city as a precautionary measure.
