The Most Rev. Oche Job, the new Methodist Archbishop of Abuja, has urged elected political leaders to renew their commitments to the people in the interest of the nation.
Job made the call on Saturday in Abuja while addressing newsmen.
He also advised leaders to fear God and to exercise restraint and avoid anything that would lead to destruction of lives and property.
He said: “We must all realise that we are given appointments to govern the nation and not to destroy the nation.
“Anything that will bring bloodshed just because of the interest of few individuals, we should avoid it.
“There may be differences because we are human beings but our differences should not lead to destruction of property or deaths.”
Commenting on the spate of defections by politicians and the crisis rocking the political parties, Job said it was normal in politics and urged Nigerians not to panic.
He said: “There will be defections as long as politicians have interests.
“But as a Church, our prayer is that the defections remain due to political differences and the nation remains one.”
The Archbishop said there would continue to be conflict of interests while politicians were at liberty to defect but urged them to desist from acts that could cause crisis.
He also urged Christians and Muslims to respect and love each other for the peace, stability and progress of the nation.
He added: “Every religion should respect the other religion.
“God has made us to be one nation and has given us these various religions.
“He (God) is interested in us.
“He has not forsaken us.”
Job took over the Abuja Archdiocese from Most Rev. Chimaroke Iweha, who has just retired.
