The Presidential NEEDS Assessment Committee for polytechnics says it is set to address the issue of dichotomy between polytechnics and universities in Nigeria.
The Chairperson of the Committee, Fatima Ahmed, made this known on Tuesday in Abuja at the opening of a training programme for members of the committee.
Ahmed said this would help to reposition the polytechnics and make them more attractive to students.
“The issue of dichotomy between degree-holders and polytechnic diploma-holders is one of the issues we will be looking into so that we can encourage more students to go for polytechnic education,” she said.
The committee chairperson said the Federal Government was determined to resolve the problems hindering the development of polytechnic education.
She said: “That is why it constituted this committee to look into the challenges, problems in terms of infrastructure and quality of students and output, as well as general compatibility with other institutions in other parts of the world.
“There is the need to improve our polytechnics to enable them to compete favourably with others in other parts of the world.
“So, there has been an agitation from polytechnics for government to look into their challenges with a view to finding solutions to them.”
Ahmed said the mandate of the committee was on-the-spot assessment of the challenges.
The committee has 12 members.
These include representatives of the National Assembly, National Board for Technical Education, Tertiary Education Trust Fund and Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics among others.
A similar training was organised in January for the NEEDS Assessment Committee for Colleges of Education.
