No fewer than 55 tons of cannabis seized by the men of the National
Drug Law Enforcement Agency, Ondo State Command, will be destroyed by
the agency as part of the activities slated to commemorate the 2013
United Nations Day Against Drug Abuse, Cultivation and Trafficking to
be held on June 26, 2013.
The agency’s Public Affairs Officer, Achibong Peter, who disclosed
this, said in the last three months, the agency has apprehended 26
suspects.
Achibong explained that over nine suspects have been convicted by the
Federal High Court while several cases are still pending in the court.
He stated that the agency secures conviction on daily basis, adding
that the NDLEA does not lose a case as the agency has the highest
number of convictions in courts in the country.
Speaking on this year’s UN Day against drug abuse, cultivation and
trafficking, always celebrated every June 26, Achibong explained that
the week-long event is tagged: “A New Psychoactive Substances and its
Consequencies.”
Achibong said the week-long event is always aimed at x-raying,
analysing the UN and drug agencies in different countries and what
have been put in place to check drug abuse.
In his words: “The mistakes we have made, successes recorded and what
we believe should be done or could have been done will be addressed.
“The celebration takes place amongst member nations all over the world and Nigeria is not left out as we are also a signatory to the UN charter.”
Achibong stressed that for the celebration, the NDLEA, Ondo State
Command, has organised various programmes.
He said the programme includes Jumat service at the Akure Central
Mosque on June 21, and Thanksgiving Service at the Restoration Chapel
of the NDLEA at 2pm on June 23.
The programmes for the grassroot will take place in the various local
governments across the state, covering the three senatorial districts.
This will commence on June 24 and will cover Akoko, Ifon and Owo local government areas. On June 25, the programme will be moved to Ore and other riverine areas such as Ondo West, Ondo East and Ile Oluji/Oke Igbo.
The grand finale of the programme, which will hold on June 26, will be held in Akure, the Ondo State capital.
It will be graced by the state Governor, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, who will be the special guest of honour.
Various other events will also be organised to spice the celebration.
This will include rally, quiz competition and public enlightenment.
Traditional rulers and council chairmen across the state will be
invited to grace the ocassions.
