Olalekan Adeyemi, President of the Nigeria Chess Federation, on Friday said that the body was hopeful that the country would participate in the 2018 World Chess Olympiad.
Adeyemi told the News Agency of Nigeria in Lagos that the upcoming biennial event which would be the 43rd edition would hold from September 23 to October 7 in Batumi, Belgium.
He added that it had not been easy sourcing for the required funds to fly the players and officials to the venue of the Chess Olympiad.
He said: “We look forward to our World Chess Olympiad, it’s a biennial event, it comes every two years, it is coming up in Batumi, Belgium and we hope to be there.
“We have not missed it in the last decade and we hope that without government support this time around we will also be there, but it is getting pretty difficult and it is getting pretty expensive.
“But we hope that we won’t miss it.’’
NAN reports that the 42rd edition of the event was held in Baku, Azerbaijan in 2016.
The country’s male team came tops in Category E of the 40th World Chess Olympiad which held in Istanbul, Turkey in 2012.
