The National Bureau of Statistics and the International Organisation for Migration would be conducting a baseline study on the dangers of irregular migration in four states in the country.

This was contained in a statement signed by Yemi Kale, Statistician General of the Federation and Chief Executive Officer of NBS, in Abuja on Thursday.

The study would be a pilot survey on Awareness and Perception of Intending and Returned Migrants on Dangers of Irregular Migration, 2020 to be conducted in Edo, Delta, Lagos and Imo States.

The study aims to identify the level of awareness of perception of intending and returned migrants on dangers of irregular migration outside Nigeria.

According to the statement, the specific objectives of the survey include: “to provide baseline data on intending and returned migrants in Nigeria.

“To provide up-to-date information on the awareness and perception of intending migrants on dangers of irregular migration.

“To generate quality data on experiences of returned migrants for the purpose of rehabilitation and re – integration.

“To identify steps taken by government to return, rehabilitate and reintegrate returned migrants in Nigeria; and to make evidence based recommendations that would help curb the phenomenon of irregular migration in Nigeria.”

The NBS stated that the data collection exercise would last for 12 days starting from August 12

The organisation further stated that its data collectors were currently in the selected pilot states to collect the required raw data from the selected respondents.

It stated: “We appeal to the selected respondents to give the required information to our data collectors as their cooperation is necessary for the smooth conduct of the survey.

“For further information, please contact Mr Ademola Adeghie of the Department of Demography and Social Statistics of National Bureau of Statistics through the telephone number: 08032190402.”
