Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has described members of the National Assembly as “unarmed robbers”.
Obasanjo said this on Thursday in Ibadan, Oyo State at the presentation of a book: “I am Kagara, I Weave the Sands of Sahara.”
The presentation took place at the University of Ibadan.
Obasanjo, who spoke on the current face-off between the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities, said the members of the National Assembly were earning the highest emoluments in the world, with 75 per cent of Nigerians living in abject poverty.
In calling the National Assembly members unarmed robbers, Obasanjo had reviewed the crisis between the Federal Government and ASUU, saying more of the country’s revenue was going into paying overhead rather than for building infrastructure and development.
He then added: “It is even worse for the National Assembly.
“They will abuse me again, but I will never stop talking about them.
“They are a bunch of unarmed robbers.
“They are one of the highest paid in the world where we have 75 per cent of our people living in abject poverty.
“They will abuse me tomorrow and if they don’t, maybe they are sleeping.
“The behaviour and character of the National Assembly should be condemned and roundly condemned.”
The book was presented by Prof. Mark Nwagwu.
