The Nasarawa State Government says it is committed to the welfare of Local Governments’ staff by ensuring regular payment of their salaries and improving their standard of living.
John Mamman, the Special Adviser to Governor Abdullahi Sule on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, made this known in Lafia on Thursday while speaking with newsmen on local government finances in the state.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that on July 16, Nasarawa State House of Assembly constituted a six-man committee to investigate the finances of the state Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs.
NAN reports that the setting up of the committee was in connection with the non-payment of June salaries to local government staff and other unnecessary deductions of local government funds in the state.
He said that Governor Sule had taken upon himself to see how the state would pay the local government staff their full salaries.
He said: “What the public may not understand is certain constitutional requirements on deductions and the utilisation of local government funds.
“As we are meeting with the state House of Assembly Committee investigating non-payment of local government June staff salaries, we will also meet with the local government chairmen to find solutions to the problem.’’
According to him, the government of Nasarawa State is also worried about the issue, as state workers had been paid their June salaries.
He said: “The local governments have been given their fund to pay their workers as a result of local government autonomy.
“They have been guided on how to disburse the fund as it is the local government that pays the salaries of the state Primary Health workers, primary school teachers, among others.’’
Mamman called on the local government staff to be patient, saying that the state government was working hard with the respective chairmen to ensure that their salaries are paid.
He added: “The governor has discussed with the chairmen. He told them what to do and they will report back any moment from now to see what can be done.”
