The Nasarawa State House of Assembly on Monday in Lafia summoned the state’s Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Alhaji Mohammed Dan’Azumi.
The commissioner was summoned over the N2.5 billion Subsidy Reinvestment and Empowerment Programme fund.
The assembly gave the order during a motion under matter of public interest, moved by Hon. Francis Orogu, the House Committee Chairman on Public Account.
Orogu, the member representing Keana constituency, alleged that the ministry spent the state local councils’ SURE-P fund without approval from the assembly.
He said: “My colleagues, I wish to draw your attention to one of the sensitive issues affecting our local governments in the state.
“In the course of my committee oversight function, we discovered that an average of between N6 million and N12 million have been allocated to the various local governments in the state under SURE-P by the Federal Government.
“The SURE-P allocation started from April 2012 and at February 2014, when we went for the oversight function.
“The Federal Government had remitted over N2.5 billion to the13 local governments in the state.
“This SURE-P fund was spent without the permission and approval from the state House of Assembly and the SURE-P account is showing zero, a red account.
“I am calling on my colleagues to support the motion to summon the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs to appear before the house to explain how the SURE-P fund was used.”
Hon. Mohammed Ibaku (PDP-Udege), who seconded the motion, said the appearance was to give the commissioner fair hearing on the issue.
In his ruling, the Speaker of the assembly, Hon. Musa Ahmed (PDP-Nasarawa Central), directed the Clerk of the House to communicate the resolution of the house to the commissioner.
The commissioner is expected to appear on Wednesday.
