Nasarawa Amazons have secured their first win in the 2017/2018 Nigerian Women Football League season by beating Pelican Stars Football Club of Calabar 3-0.
The NWFL match day 2 encounter was played at Lafia Township Stadium on Wednesday.
The first half of the game was cagey as the away side defended to thwart attacking chances created by the home side.
Even when a clear chance fell to the home side to score in the 42nd minute and take the lead, they failed.
After carefully dribbling a Pelican Stars defender, Imo Anam had only the goalkeeper to beat but failed to score, leaving supporters who jumped up in celebration stunned.
In the second half, Nasarawa Amazons continued their search for goal and in the 46th minute, Aisha Bello capitalised from poor defending to smash home from close range.
In spite of the lead, the home side continued to press for another goal and once more, striker Bello was available to score from close range in the 62nd minute and make it 2-0.
Anam made amends for her first half miss by connecting to a cross to nod in the third goal in the 93rd minute, thereby ending the game 3-0 in favour of the home side.
Christopher Danjuma, Head Coach of Amazons, described the match as an affirmation of his assertion in his team’s first match against Robo Stars of Lagos that despite the draw in the encounter, Nasarawa Amazons remained champions of the league and would try to maintain the status.
Danjuma said: “I have told you guys before, we are still the champions and we won’t let that go easily.
“The first half was a bit defensive and my strikers missed a lot of chances but I am happy they turned things around in the second half.”
