The Lagos Zonal Command of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons on Friday secured the sentencing of a woman, Chinyere Ekwuillo, to seven years and six months imprisonment for obtaining, possessing and attempting to sell a baby.
An internal memo obtained by The Eagle Online showed the conviction and sentencing was secured at a Federal High Court in Lagos.
According to the memo, the court, presided over by Justice A. Aluko, sentenced Ekwuillo after NAPTIP’s prosecution team had successfully proved the charge beyond reasonable doubt.

It noted that the convict was dragged to court on a three count charge filed on September 7, 2022 and the defendant was arraigned and remanded on October 21, 2022.
The memo said: “The trial commenced on the 30th day of November, 2023 with the defendant facing charges bordering on obtaining possession of a baby, selling and attempting to sell a baby contrary to Section 21 and 29 of the TIPPEA, Act 2015.
“The defendant was convicted and sentenced to three years imprisonment on the 1st count (obtaining possession of a person with intent knowing it to be likely or having reasons to know that such a person will be subjected to exploitation); sentenced to three years imprisonment on count 2 (on the offence of selling a person with intent knowing it to be likely or having reasons to know that such a person will be subjected to exploitation) and one year six months imprisonment on count three bordering on attempting to commit an offence under the TIPPEA Act.
“The terms of imprisonment are to run concurrently.”
