The Nigerian Airspace Management Agency on Wednesday said it had commenced the calibration of navigational equipment at airports across the country to enhance air safety.
Supo Atobatele, the General Manager of NAMA, said this in a press statement issued in Lagos.
Atobatele said: “The one-week exercise is being handled by ASECNA, a Dakar-based calibration firm.
“The exercise commenced at the Birni Kebbi Airport, where newly installed Doppler Very High Omni-directional Radio Range (DVOR), Distance Measuring Equipment (DME) and Instrument Landing System (ILS) were commissioned.
“Routine checks on VOR/DME equipment at Sokoto, Jos and Abuja are to be carried out by the technical team, including the Precision Approach Path Indicator (PAPI) of the Abuja and Kaduna airports.”
According to Atobatele, there will be a re-check of the glide slope of Kaduna, while the newly installed Conventional VOR /DME at Enugu airport will be commissioned.
He said the VOR/DME at Owerri and ILS/DME at Ilorin would be used for routine check.
Atobatele said the e-calibration would assist in putting the navigational aids at the airports in proper shape.
“NAMA spends about N200 million annually to calibrate navigational aids at 26 airports across the country,” he said.
