An Abuja High Court on Monday granted permission to an Austrian, George Eider, who is facing trial over an alleged N5.2 billion aviation fraud, to travel out for medical treatment.
In his ruling, Justice Abubakar Umar granted the accused permission to travel on medical grounds.
Umar also ordered that the accused’s counsel, Chinonye Ibeneme, should sign an undertaking with the court on behalf of his client.
The judge ordered that the accused must unfailingly return to the country by September 16 and adjourned the case to September 23 for continuation of hearing.
The counsel’s application sought the court’s permission for the accused to travel to Vienna, Austria, for what his doctor described as a “periodic and overdue medical treatment.”
Eiger was first arraigned by the EFCC on October 19, 2008.
He was charged alongside former Aviation Minister, Babalola Borisade; Timothy Dairo, a former Personal Assistant to Borisade; and Rowland Iyayi, former Managing Director of the Nigeria Airspace Management Agency.
Earlier, Eider’s counsel had filed an application seeking an order of the court to grant his client permission to travel for periodic medical examination.
Ibeneme had also sought for an order for the release of Eider’s international passport, which had been in the court’s custody.
