Without prosecution, the Accountant of the Nigeria Premier League board, Joe Ogbowie, has regained his freedom from police.
Weeks after spending time with police for alleged withdrawal of N12 million with a forged signature, Ogbowie has been secretly let off the hook.
Ogbowie was picked up by men of the Special Anti Robbery Squad, Garki, Abuja on February, 7, 2012.
The Eagle Online gathered that the leadership of the NPL might have facilitated the release of the embattled accountant, who allegedly threatened to open cans of worms in the NPL.
The accountant allegedly confessed that he forged the signature of the Executive Secretary of the NPL, Tunji Babalola, to withdraw the said amount last month.
However, a top staff of the NPL who spoke on condition of anonymity, exonerated the leadership of NPL on the events that led to Ogbowie’s release.
The source said: “The police informed us after he was released.
“The reason they gave was that the law of the land does not permit them to detain any accused for more than 24 hours before prosecution.
“The police assured us that he will be prosecuted and we are still waiting for them to take him (ogbowie) to court/”
Speaking further, our source hinted that the NPL has dismissed the accountant.
“There is no way he can return here because his position has even been advertised long time ago,” he said.
The source added: “If the law says he cannot be detained for more than 24 hours, why then was he detained for more than four weeks?
“Why is it taking so long for them to prosecute him?
“We were even told not to let the matter gets to the media.”
