Juliet Mbonu, Producer of a new movie on sex-trafficking, “Breakout” has urged parents to scrutinize people who offer to take their girls abroad for work.
The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime said in a report on trafficking in persons that the most common form of human trafficking (79 percent) was for sexual exploitation.
UNODC said that based on data gathered from 155 countries, the victims of sexual exploitation are predominantly women and girls.
Mbonu told the News Agency of Nigeria on the telephone from Brookeville, Maryland, Washington DC on Saturday that majority of girls taken abroad are used for sex-trafficking.
She said: “Sex-trafficking is affecting every part of the world. In Africa, it is more rampant in Nigeria and South Africa. Parents should check the background of people before they allow their girls travel abroad.
“Parents should also know what the person is doing abroad and get a reference from other people.”
The producer said that people are desperate to travel to Europe and America and end up falling into wrong hands.
Mbonu said: “These unfortunate girls are used for sex-trafficking once abroad. We urge such girls to speak out and report to the authorities abroad. They should not be afraid to speak out.”
Mbonu said that the movie was a picture of what happens in sex-trafficking “from the point the girl is brought out to the prostitution”.
She said: “It is a true picture of when the girl is brought from Africa to what they go through abroad.”
According to Mbonu, celebrated Nollywood actor, Sylvester Madu directed the movie and gave it a true human interest aspect.
She stated: “Sylvester Mbonu brought the idea and I worked with him to do the script. He also used his talent to make the movie very interesting.”
The producer said that actors from Senegal, Ghana, Cameroon Sierra Leone, and Nigeria were part of the movie while it was shot on locations in Nigeria and United States of America.
Mbonu commended Koby Maxwell, a Ghanaian producer for working hard to see to the successful premiere of the movie in America.
Breakout will premiere at the Bowie Centre for the performing arts, Maryland, on November 17.
She said that there are plans to premiere the movie in Nigeria, South Africa, and Newyork.
