Cleaning the engine of a modern car is not necessary and may even cause damage, German experts warn.
A technical expert with ADAC motoring organisation, Carsten Graf, made the disclosure on Thursday in Landsberg, Germany.
Graf said: “The engine compartment is not designed for a lot of water.
“Although the components are protected against moisture, foam or jets of water could get into the engine sensors or alternator.”
A clean engine will impress a potential buyer, but the hose-down only has cosmetic value, Graf said.
According to him, an oil leak that has attracted dirt is the only sound technical reason for carrying out a clean up.
“A wash using water-soluble engine degreaser is best and should be done by professionals,” he added.
