The Minister of Defence, Mansur Dan-Ali, on Tuesday in Abuja inaugurated a “Fusion Centre’’- intelligence analysis centre at the Defence Intelligence Agency.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that shortly after inaugurating the centre, Dan-Ali received briefs from the Theatre Commander in Maiduguri and defence sections in Bamako and Yaounde and Niamey through video teleconference.
President Muhammadu Buhari had in November, 2017, approved the setting up of an intelligence fusion centre in Maiduguri, for the purpose of gathering and sharing intelligence among the security agencies in the country.
The centre is to tackle the desperate actions of Boko Haram terrorists in the North-East, who use underage children, particularly girls, as suicide bombers.
The minister said that the centre would enhance intelligence analysis and enable the DIA to contribute “meaningfully to national security objectives’’.
He promised that the Federal Government would continue to sustain its efforts at building the capacity of security agencies and provide environment conducive for their personnel to carry out their duties.
Dan-Ali commended the DIA for setting up the centre and charged it to make the best use of the facility.
The minister also inaugurated a hostel at the agency’s college at Karu, a satellite town in the FCT, its staff quarters at Mabushi, operational vehicles and a fire service station at the DIA in Asokoro.
The Chief of Defence Intelligence, Air Vice Marshal Ernest Musa, said that security challenges being currently faced in the country and emerging ones could only be tackled with new “unconventional thinking’’.
Musa said that one of the cardinal missions of the agency was to enhance its operational capabilities through comprehensive adoption and utilisation of technology.
He also said that the agency would continue to sharpen its personnel skills, while employing and deploying those tools which served as force multipliers.
