Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike on Wednesday commenced its post-UTME screening for no fewer than 15,000 candidates that registered for the exercise.
An authoritative source in the university told the News Agency of Nigeria that the figure included candidates who chose the university as first choice and scored 180 and above in their Joint Admission and Matriculation Board examination.
The source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said not all the candidates that registered might be screened.
“We know that some candidates, who registered for the exercise, may not have made the screening due to one reason or another,” the source said.
The exercise was organised in batches at different venues on the campus.
Two candidates, Ifeoma Uwakwe and Kelechi Onyema, who spoke with NAN, said they expected to write aptitude test as was the case in the past.
Uwakwe said: “This was not what I expected.
“I thought they were going to give us written test so I came with necessary writing materials.
“Surprisingly, the screening had to do with one’s bio-data and some other information rather than academic exercise.”
The Chairman of screening committee, Prof. Irene Ijeh, said the exercise did not flout the ban on post-UTME examination.
Ijeh said the exercise would neither be in the form of test nor examination, adding that it was meant to help the university to ascertain that the candidates actually wrote the JAMB examination.
Ijeh also said tvice chancellors of universities agreed with the Federal Government to peg the charge for the exercise at N2,000.
