The Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria said it sanctioned seven medical practitioners for professional misconduct last year.
Dr. Abdulmumini Ibrahim, the Registrar of the council, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Wednesday in Abuja.
Ibrahim said two out of the affected members were suspended for three months and their professional certificates withdrawn, while five went on appeal.
He explained that any practitioner sanctioned by the council’s tribunal has every right to appeal before the Federal Court of Appeal within three months of such sanction.
The registrar also said the council received more than 100 complaints within the period under review, describing large number of those complaints as frivolous and lacking in merit.
Ibrahim said: “The council received over 100 complaints last year but some of them were frivolous, they have no basis.
“In the course of investigating complaints and when they are found to be frivolous, they are thrown out at that level.”
However, Ibrahim said the cases were not exhausted last year because of the dissolution of the council’s board.
He said: “They are still pending.
“The council tribunal is like other regular courts.
“When somebody is prosecuted before that court, he or she is given a chance to appeal same with the tribunal.
“If somebody is sanctioned, he has the privilege of taking the case to the Court of Appeal within three months of sanction and if he fails to do that within the stipulated period the sanction is implemented or enforced.”
