Some fans of popular Nigerian singer and boss of EME music Label, Bankole Wellington, popularly known as Banky W, said the singer’s good looks is attracting financially desperate women to him.
The singer had on Thursday posted on social media that he was tired of having random women send him messages that claimed God had revealed to them that he would be their husband.
Some of the Abuja-based fans, who spoke to the News Agency of Nigeria on Friday in Abuja, expressed their views on the singer’s sought after status.
Gbenga Adewole, a fitness trainer, told NAN that being sought after was something most people wished for, but could become annoying after some time.
Adewole said: “Everyone likes to be admired by others and most people, if not everyone, wished they could be sought after, but I think everyone has his or her limit.
“There is just so much attention you can reasonably take before it becomes a burden and I think that is what Banky is going through.
“With his good looks and the bad economic situation in Nigeria, I am not surprised that women are suddenly having dreams and revelations of being married to him.”
Rose Chukwudozie, a fashion designer, said women who felt desperate for a rich man to take care of their finances were the ones who felt comfortable enough to use God to woo Wellington.
Chukwudozie said: “I am a big fan of Banky W and I really think he is a good looking man, especially when he is wearing his hats.
“I think people have crushes and admire celebrities for their good looks every time, but when you become obsessed with a celebrity and start sending messages to the person constantly, that becomes a problem.
“There is one particular woman who seems to keep stalking Banky W and he has been kind enough to hide her name when sharing the pictures of her messages.
“All these women should stop embarrassing our gender.”
Victoria George, a caterer, said she was amazed by how far some women could go for money and fame.
George said: “The length to which women will go for money and fame really amazes me.
“Later we will talk about how men lie to us and say anything possible to get a woman.
“Now, look at what these women are doing.
“If you throw yourself at a man and he doesn’t respond, the bruise on your pride should make you know that you should stop chasing after him and move on.
“Instead, we have ladies disturbing him on his Instagram and Twitter, talking about how God had told them that they were meant for each other.
“I wonder why God is telling only the women and not Banky W.”
Gregory Ibu, a pharmacist, told NAN that the fact that wellington was the only single man among his friends was what was causing the sudden flock of women on his social media platforms.
Ibu said: “Banky was the one who informed us his fans that he was the only one who was single among his group of friends.
“This information, of course, was going to attract women to him because it seemed as if he was announcing it for that purpose.
“What makes me laugh is how women are now checking up on him and his family to get his attention and acting as if they are family friends of the man.
“The competition for the bachelor’s attention is becoming so stiff that some are now claiming revelations from God.
“I thank God that he is bald headed.
“If not, I’m sure some women would pack his hair at the barbers shop and use it for some love potion.”
Wellington had shared pictures of these messages on his snapchat and addressed the issue.
He said: “If God tells you that somebody is your husband or wife, then let God tell that person too. Don’t be the person to speak for God, let God speak for himself.
“Recently I’ve been getting a lot of people saying God said you’re my husband, God said I’m your wife.
“It’s a lie because God told me nothing about you. God needs to tell me himself.”
Wellington also addressed the issue of marriage shaming among some Nigerians.
He said: “Can we please stop with the marriage shaming, can we stop with the pressure on people, it is enough, abeg.
“Single people, the same people who are putting pressure on you to marry will be the ones talking about you and mocking you if the marriage does not work out.
“Don’t rush for anybody.
“Do it at the right time, for you with the right person for you and everything will hopefully work out by God’s grace.”
